ONE PHOTO EVERY WEEK 2/52/2025-NASI AMBENG

I was born in Kelantan and naturally my favourite rice breakfast are nasi belauk , nasi dagang and nasi kerabu. However , when I moved to BB Bangi more than fifteen years ago, I discovered nasi ambeng at MAEPS Pasar Tani next to MAHA and UPM. After a few months, I got addicted to nasi ambeng and nowadays I go to MAEPS Pasar Tani every fortnight to get my dosage of nasi ambeng. The price started at RM6 six years ago but now, it is RM8!

After a few visits, I got to know Ejies the business owner. This nasi ambeng is a Javanese specility but I love it. He started working for FAMA and resigned to become food vendor at Pasar Tani/Pasar Malam around Selangor. He is the cook and the business owner. His cousins attend to the customers.

What are factors of his success story?

1. Nasi ambeng-niche food

2. He is passionate about his product.

3. Husband and wife team are good and competent to make the the food and its ingredients.

4. He himself is frying the chicken to ensure quality.

5.Low cost operations

My advice to him: Open a restaurant and supply limited version nasi ambeng bungkus to kopitiams and cafes.

I’ve only dined at Damascus Restaurant once—drawn in by the promise of authentic shawarma and strong Turkish coffee. The meal didn’t disappoint; the flavors were bold and satisfying. But when the bill arrived, the aftertaste turned bittersweet—much like the coffee itself. That experience stayed with me. These days, I prefer to grab a takeaway from their roadside counter instead.
